Artist Statement

Having always lived in Ipswich, I find great inspiration from the surrounding landscape. I have a broad range of interests and this extends from local industrial landscapes such as the Ipswich docks area, the tranquility of the Suffolk landscape, to more modern studies and portraits. One thread that runs through a good deal of my work is my interest in the contrasts of bright light with dark shadows.

Art for me is an evolving experience and I continually enjoy discovering new ways to paint. I am mainly self-taught and this presents certain challenges. I have however worked on courses run by a number of different local artists and this has always given me a fresh way to look at the world.

I sketch and photograph in the field and work up ideas in my studio. My work is predominantly watercolour and the work of Leonard Squirrell has been a great inspiration to me. I also enjoy working with the bold colours and texture of acrylic, and the pleasing effects that can be achieved with soft pastels.
